FSMBC Close Quarters Newsletter October 2014

club logo copy

FAREHAM SAILING & MOTOR BOAT CLUB

FOUNDED 1850

‘CLOSE QUARTERS’

Keeping you up to date with the latest news from FSMBC

Dear Member

Welcome to your October newsletter from Fareham Sailing and Motor Boat Club.

In the next few pages you will find details of recent happenings  along with details of upcoming events which I hope you will find of interest.

The newsletter will be available   on the Club website and for those that don’t have a computer at home, copies will be available in the Club House so please spread the word.

Commodores report

IT’S NEW!! One of my personal pledges for the Club was to improve communications and following constructive feedback received on my updates for August and September, have decided to move to a newsletter format.

This is our monthly opportunity to share Club matters and I warmly welcome any input  from you to highlight the many different areas of FSMBC that all Club Members can join in with.

Thank you to everyone who supported the Charity event for OYTS at the end of August.  We managed to raise £657.00 and with previously raised funds, total to date is £751.10.  Congratulations to Chris & Steve Capel who had the winning lucky entry ticket, a day pass to sail on John Laing, a wonderful prize donated by OYTS.  Other winners of free lift out, 3 free overnight stays and a pair of Boat Show tickets were all Club members which is great – well done all of you.  A formal presentation will be made   to OYTS on November 21st at 20.30 and Gaynor is doing food so please come along as it will be a good evening in the Club.

Our AGM is 16th November and a few positions on the Club Committee will be vacant so if you want to make a difference in how the Club is run, please let existing Committee members know as soon as possible for your names to be forwarded for possible election.

Sailing

Barts Bash September 21st.

Thanks to everyone who supported this great cause, monies raised have yet to be determined and information will follow in the next edition of the newsletter.

Club boats enjoyed warm sunshine and great sailing in and around the Solent as well as voyages to the West Country and across Channel for those wines and cheeses!  Must be some tales in there somewhere worthy of sharing at a Club talk in the winter months………………….

Lots of visitors including the Silhouette rally and Warsash Sailing Club in September is proof that the word is spreading FSMBC is open and welcomes fellow sailors – terrific!

Pirates Day

After many years of splendid co-ordination, Bill Baird and Carol Murkin have stood down from Pirates Day and I’m sure everyone who has experienced the wonderful escapades will join in with saying thank you for all their hard work and efforts.  The huge  number of children who have enjoyed themselves firing water pistols at their friends on other boats followed by a brilliant BBQ in the dinghy park from Kids and the Rainbow Centre is testament to how successful Pirates has become over the years..  The day is firmly embedded in the FSMBC calendar and I’m delighted that Dave Branscomb has agreed to take on the co-ordination of boats and the Social Committee will arrange the ashore activities.  Bill and Carol have led the way and we will surely follow their brilliant example.

Bosuns

Car park lines in Salterns have been newly painted by Pam and Vic Carr, very smart.

Tony has kept the momentum up with numerous projects around all Club areas and has a working board in the Workshop entrance highlighting ongoing work.  If you are able to assist with one or some of these, please check the board and let Tony know what or when you can assist – all help gratefully received.

Social

Trafalgar night October 18th – tickets sold out very quickly but it’s always worth putting names on the waiting list just in case. Please note that the Barwill close at 15.00hrs to allow for setting up for the evening.  This is a ticket event and Club members not attending will be able to visit the bar after 22.00hrs.

Bonfire night and Halloween are combined this year on 31st October – prizes or best fancy dress – a right little sparkler!  Tickets £7.00 from the Social Ladies, Jacket potatoes with either chilli or cheeses with a light sweet included.

Tickets for the Dinner Dance which is being held 15th November  at Lysses Hotel in High Street Fareham will be on sale very soon at £35.00 and will be available from the Social Ladies – see you there!

Doreen Clark is celebrating her birthday on 22nd November in the Club – American Supper, all welcome.

Also on sale soon will be  raffle tickets for the Xmas raffle so be sure to get some – got to be in to win it!.

Loads going on – soon be Xmas…………………………………………!

Other things

A new addition to the opportunities FSMBC has to offer is the Angling section set up by Stuart Pavey and Kev Syms.  There have been competitions already between the 2 of them and although successful, they could do with more participants!
If this is something you’d like to join in with, please contact Stuart directly who will be happy to advise.
Well done to the guys for getting the Angling section underway and look forward to seeing the pictures of the hard won catches!

Building plans for the new folding doors will be available to view in the Club House shortly. Robin Wren has been diligently working on this project for some time whilst also considering the disabled access project both of which will greatly enhance the ambience for the Club.  Be sure to have a look at the plans and thanks to Robin for moving these projects forward.

Boat Jumble October 18th 10.30 – 14.30 in the Work shop – email Dee on dee.orme@tiscali.co.uk to reserve a pitch.

Flares Amnesty  - Don’t just chuck them in the bin – hand them in at Hamble Point Marina 19th October 10am – 15.00

Boat Offer:  Wicor Marine have a lift out  offer May – September which includes: Lift out, store ashore for 2 weeks and then relaunch for £250.00, contact 01329 237112 for further details.

FSMBC regalia including tops and  caps   are available to purchase, price list and
brochure  is in the Club House and all enquiries should be made to Bill Baird.

FSMBC merchandise including brooches, ties and burgees can be purchased from the Club House.  Let bar staff know your requirements and items can be arranged for collection.

(Regalia and merchandise  will be on display in the foyer when it has been refurbished next year)

Membership application forms are beside the bar till if you are asked how to join the Club.  Instructions for completion are written on the form.

The Club calendar for 2015  is now  being compiled so if you have a date in mind for an event that you’d like to use the Club House for next year, please email those requirements to the main Club email address as soon as possible.

Close Quarters

Articles written by members are very welcome so if you have been somewhere exotic or done something exciting please don’t keep it to yourself! E-mail to dee.orme@tiscali.co.uk for inclusion in next months edition.  If anyone would like to take on the publishing of our monthly newsletter, please let Dee know on e-mail address as
shown.
